The Manhattan Park Pool is opening for its summer this weekend, with a new mural by Technodrome1, so quickly before it opens, a recap of the MP Pool Party series thus far. Above, the pool in 2014, before the installations.
In 2015, K&Co and Pliskin Architecture, together with Citihabitats, revamped the aging pool club at Manhattan Park by adding colorful furniture and hammocks, and by commissioning an 8,000sf mural by street artist HOT TEA, which was named Asylum and is pictured above. This was meant to be a pop-up for the summer, while a larger renovation of the pool area was being contemplated.
The success of the first year led the team to position the project as a recurring installation – a new mural would be commissioned for the 2016 summer season, using the same color palette, but with a new artist bringing their signature style to the pool. For the 2nd year, Andrew B. Faris was tapped to create the rainbow pool mural, which he called Block Party, and is pictured above.
For the 2017 season, Gregg V. Emery joined the pool party artists and created Waves off Roosevelt Island. The mural featured large circles painted over a large blue field as part of Gregg’s interpretation of the series’ color palette.
