For the renovation of a 125-year-old brick rowhouse in Brooklyn’s Boerum Hill Historic District, Pliskin Architecture imagined a bright, modern home that fits within the historic character of the neighborhood. The project required reconfiguring a former 2-unit building into a single-family home, complete with 4 bedrooms, 4 ½ bathrooms, generous kitchen, large living room, an outdoor deck, and a family room at garden level.

Illuminated by a large skylight, a new central wood stair allows light into the core of the house. Traditional townhouse materials like brick and oak were reconfigured in a clean, contemporary language to provide a sense of unfussy domesticity. Natural light throughout the house provides an inviting warmth at every turn.

Two levels of living space open completely to the lush rear yard through folding doors. At the parlour level, the kitchen and dining area extends onto an inviting deck. At the garden level, the family room expands into a sunken yard with soft light filtered by the perforated deck above. The renovation also included structural improvements and the installation of new plumbing, electrical, and mechanical systems, as well as upgrades to the insulation and roofing to optimize energy efficiency.
