Completed, 2015.

This expansion for a technology company tripled the area of the global headquarters in NYC, and allowed them to reinvent their office culture in the process. Organizational shifts, from cubicles to collaborative benching systems and from formal meeting rooms to informal activity hubs, were introduced to best align the new space with the company’s brand. With some spaces exposing the building’s infrastructure, and other spaces highly finished, the office now accommodates a range of activities from the Boardroom, through phone booths, to flexible hoteling stations.

Phase II, a full floor renovation and the last of a series, creates a contrast from the previously completed phase I of the expansion. Leaving much of the structure exposed with polished concrete columns and dark painted waffle slab, using a grid of lights that follows the waffle grid, and using complimenting warm and dark materials, this floor infuses an industrial feel alongside minimal detailing, and distributes spaces for work, collaboration and play throughout the floor. A long table, partially suspended from the slab above and facing southern exposures with Views of Lower Manhattan, allows for short meetings or landing spots for employees from the company’s other offices. The lights in this area are also elongated, and randomly scattered against the rigid backdrop of the waffle slab above. The pantry on the floor features a central bar made of recycled skateboard tops from the Focused Skateboard Woodworks in the Netherlands. The bar was custom made align with other pieces in the pantry, creating a unique piece in the center of the new community on the floor.
